SQM

SQM, one of the world’s largest non-metallic mining companies and a global leader in lithium production, implemented Gauss Control in its transportation operations in the Atacama Desert. The company sought to improve road safety in a 24/7 operation that transports critical materials across hundreds of kilometers every day.

Challenge

The operation faced high levels of road risk due to continuous driving over long routes, extreme conditions, and the involvement of multiple contractor companies. In addition, the lack of objective visibility into actual risk levels made preventive decision-making more difficult.

Solution

Gauss Control conducted a comprehensive assessment, integrating with contractors’ GPS systems to analyze operational data. It then implemented its fatigue risk management platform, adjusting shifts, minimizing nighttime driving, monitoring rest periods, and reducing excessive working hours. Real-time management tools, reporting capabilities, and internal safe-driving initiatives were also introduced.

Impact

>In just six months, accident frequency was reduced by 39% and serious accidents decreased by 48%, without affecting productivity. In addition, the number of drivers classified as very high risk (fatigue index < 1 >70) decreased by 78%, validating the effectiveness of a preventive approach based on data and technology.

Copec

COPEC, a leading fuel distribution company in Chile, decided to implement an innovative Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) through the Gauss Control platform. The initiative aimed to further strengthen its high safety standards and protect more than 1,200 drivers across the country.

Challenge

Despite its strong safety culture, COPEC had reached a limit: increasing prevention efforts were no longer producing further reductions in accident rates. In particular, the Mejillones operation showed high severity rates in transportation accidents, requiring new strategies to address driver fatigue.

Solution

Gauss Control integrated its biological and mathematical fatigue prediction models with GPS data and drowsiness sensors across COPEC’s operation. A comprehensive FRMS was implemented, including shift biocompatibility, alertness monitoring, fatigue training, and an AI-powered mitigation plan. The strategy was subsequently expanded from Mejillones to the company’s nationwide operations.

Impact

The project enabled COPEC to reduce serious incidents by 63% at the Mejillones operation and by 45% nationwide between 2018 and 2019, helping consolidate a stronger safety culture based on fatigue risk prevention, continuous monitoring, and ongoing training for drivers and supervisors.

ENAP

ENAP, Chile’s National Petroleum Company, which operates critical fuel transportation services, strengthened its commitment to road safety by adopting a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) based on the Gauss Control platform and Guardian sensors from Seeing Machines.

Challenge

Road accidents accounted for two-thirds of occupational fatalities in Chile, with fatigue being a key contributing factor. ENAP needed to implement a world-class safety policy that directly addressed the risks of drowsiness and drivers’ cultural resistance to in-cab monitoring.

Solution

The project integrated computer vision, artificial intelligence, and shift biocompatibility models. It included the installation of Guardian sensors, in-person and e-learning training programs, medical assessments, and real-time intervention protocols for microsleep events. With Gauss Control’s support, ENAP also strengthened its change management process, addressing drivers’ initial skepticism.

Impact

The initiative reduced microsleep events by 85% and the accident rate per million kilometers traveled by 55% between 2017 and 2019. It also reduced attempts to disable the sensors by 98%, consolidating a new road safety culture within ENAP and turning the project into a risk management model recognized as an industry benchmark.
